MPs asked to submit their bodyguards for fresh vetting following Charles Were’s murder

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has instructed all Members of Parliament to submit their security details for a fresh vetting following the assassination of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles ong’s, who was in Nairobi.

Speaking during the late MP’s requiem mass at Consolata Shrine in Nairobi, the Speaker further instructed the Clerk of Parliament to submit the CCTV footage showing the late MP’s movement and activities from the moment he arrived at the precincts to the time he departed.

“In looking at the tragedy that befell our MP, we encourage the police not to narrow their investigations to matters around the City Mortuary,” he noted.

“I have instructed the clerk of Parliament to put together all our CCTV footage in Parliament on the activities around Were from the time he arrived at the gym around 6:00 am to the time he left Parliament at 7:00 pm.”

Wetangula also called on Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to ensure all CCTV cameras work effectively for 24 hours to enhance security across Kenya’s capital.

He noted that such measures will deter perpetrators from conducting criminal activities and ensure a safer environment for the public.

“Going forward, I encourage each one of you to submit your security details for vetting for us to get to know what kind of security you have, Kikulacho kinguoni mwako. We will be able to assist in doing so,” Wetangula stated.

“The Nairobi governor is here, we want to see that all CCTV cameras work optimally for 24 hours to capture wicked characters around the city.”

The MP was shot dead on April 30, 2025, while in traffic by a gunman whose accomplice was riding a motorbike. So far, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested six suspects over the MP’s murder.

The detectives are still pursuing additional suspects, including a police officer believed to have been part of an organised network that carried out the crime.
