MTV 2025: Rema, Tems, Burna Boy, Wizkid, Ayra Starr, Asake earn nominations

Nigerian Afrobeats stars are once again back in the global spotlight as Rema, Tems, Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, and Asake secure nominations at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards.

The nominees for this year’s VMAs were announced on Tuesday, with Nigerian and other notable international acts competing in the Best Afrobeats category, alongside their international collaborators.

Heavyweight artists Burna Boy and Asake are tied for the most nods among Nigerian and African artists, each holding it down with two nominations. Rema, Wizkid, and Ayra Starr, who secured one nomination each.

Burna Boy earned nominations in the Video for Good category for ‘Higher’ and in the Best Afrobeats category for ‘Tatata’ featuring Travis Scott. At the same time, Asake received two nods in the Best Afrobeats category for ‘Active’ featuring Travis Scott and ‘Get It Right’ with Tems.

The Afrobeats category also features hit singles, including Moliy’s Shake It to the Max (Fly) [Remix] with Silent Addy, Skillibeng, and Shenseea; Rema’s Baby (Is It a Crime); Tyla’s Push 2 Start; and Piece of My Heart by Wizkid featuring Brent Faiyaz.

Meanwhile, Ayra Starr was nominated in the MTV PUSH Performance of the Year category for ‘Last Heartbreak Song’, being the only African act in the category.

American singer and songwriter leads this year’s VMAs nominations, finishing with a total of 12 nods, including nominations in the categories for Best Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, and Video of the Year. Following closely behind is Bruno Mars with 11 and Kendrick Lamar with 10.

Other top nominees include ROSÉ and Sabrina Carpenter, with 8 nominations each; Ariana Grande and The Weeknd, with 7; Billie Eilish, with 6; Charli XCX, with 5; and Bad Bunny, Doechii, Ed Sheeran, Jelly Roll, Miley Cyrus, and Tate McRae, with 4 nominations each.

The 2025 VMAs also introduced two new categories: Best Pop Artist and Best Country.

This year, the VMAs will take place on September 7 at the UBS Center in Eilmont, New York, and it will air live for the first time on CBS, alongside simulcasts on MTV and Paramount+.
