The Lagos State Government has sealed off a construction site in Lekki following a fatal crane accident that claimed the life of a crane operator, prompting an urgent investigation by the Lagos State Safety Commission.
The tragic incident, which occurred at an active construction site in Lekki Phase 1, involved a crane mishap that led to the death of the operator, identified as Rotimi Adesina. According to officials, Adesina suffered severe injuries on site and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was later confirmed dead.
Officials from the Safety Commission responded promptly to the scene. Preliminary investigations revealed serious lapses in operational safety, leading the agency to seal off the site immediately to prevent further risk to workers and the public.
Director-General of the Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, disclosed that a stop-work order and abatement notice were served on the company. “We will not allow any compromise when it comes to safety. The wellbeing of workers and residents remains our utmost priority,” Mojola stated.
The Commission confirmed that the site’s Project Manager, Hein Coerzer, and Company Secretary, Ndidi Uchechukwu, were engaged for a preliminary inquiry and asked to provide all relevant documentation regarding the crane and the project’s overall safety compliance.
However, both officials indicated that the required documents were stored at the company’s head office. The firm has been formally directed to submit all relevant safety and equipment records for detailed inspection.
Mojola extended his condolences to the family of the late crane operator and emphasized the state’s resolve to ensure strict enforcement of safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies.
“As investigations progress, further updates will be made available to the public. What matters now is ensuring accountability and putting in place corrective measures,” he added.
The Lagos State Safety Commission reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and maintaining safety standards across all sectors of the state’s economy.
