Ex-Super Eagles Winger Okwuchukwu Waobikeze, a.k.a. ‘Babaoo’, Dies Peacefully In The U.S.

Former Nigerian international and ex-Super Eagles winger, Okwuchukwu Waobikeze, fondly remembered by fans as ‘Babaoo’, has passed away.

The news of his death was confirmed on Monday, July 14, by his brother, Eli Waobikeze, who made the announcement via a heartfelt statement on Facebook.

According to the post, the former footballer died peacefully at approximately 7:34 p.m. Central Standard Time (CST) in the United States.

“On behalf of the Waobikeze family, I would like to announce the peaceful passing to eternal glory of my brother Allen Okwuchukwu Waobikeze. He transitioned at about 7:34 pm CST,”the message read.

“We appreciate everyone who prayed, called, and visited my brother. Every funeral arrangement will be posted. Please keep our family in your prayers at this time as we plan to send forth our beloved brother. God bless you all.”
Waobikeze carved out a name for himself in Nigeria’s domestic football scene during the 1990s, dazzling fans with his flair, pace, and powerful left foot. He played for top Nigerian clubs including Sharks FC of Port Harcourt, BCC Lions of Gboko, and the once-dominant Iwuanyanwu Nationale, now known as Heartland FC.

Though he never enjoyed extended time on the global stage, Waobikeze earned respect for his consistent performances and was admired for his contributions to grassroots football development.

His death comes on the heels of another painful loss in Nigerian football, following the recent passing of former Super Eagles captain and goalkeeper, Peter Rufai.

Tributes have begun pouring in from former teammates, fans, and members of the football community, remembering Waobikeze as a gifted winger and beloved figure on and off the pitch. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
