We are under siege. Terrorism is eating up Benue – Governor Alia cries out, accuses politicians of fueling the crisis

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has declared that the state is under siege by terrorists and bandits, emphasizing that recent attacks are no longer mere herders-farmers clashes but orchestrated acts of terrorism. He described the assaults as “directed, planned, and executed,” involving specialized killers who engage in guerrilla warfare tactics, striking swiftly and vanishing without a trace. Governor Alia further accused some Abuja-based politicians of sponsoring these attacks, stating that an interim report from a judicial panel has identified several prominent individuals, with a full report expected next week.

The recent violence in Benue has been severe, with multiple attacks resulting in significant casualties. In one instance, at least 20 people were killed in simultaneous assaults on communities in Gwer West and Apa areas. Local sources suggest the actual death toll may exceed 30. Another attack in April left 42 people dead across four communities, including women and children.

Governor Alia has consistently urged politicians to cease politicizing the insecurity in the state. He has called on them to support efforts to address the crisis rather than incite violence or sponsor militia groups. In March 2024, he appealed to politicians to stop politicizing insecurity and support his administration’s efforts to restore peace.

The situation has drawn criticism from various quarters. Former Governor Samuel Ortom accused Governor Alia of downplaying the severity of the attacks and concealing the truth about the killings and mass burials. Ortom claimed that Alia’s administration has attempted to conceal the truth about the killings and mass burials occurring in many parts of the state.

The ongoing violence has not only resulted in loss of life but also threatens the agricultural productivity of the region, often referred to as Nigeria’s “Food Basket.” The conflict between herders and farmers, exacerbated by climate change, overpopulation, and allegations of land-grabbing and ethnic tensions, has severely impacted farming in Benue, jeopardizing national food security.

Governor Alia’s administration faces significant challenges in addressing the escalating insecurity in Benue State. The involvement of politicians in fueling the crisis complicates efforts to restore peace and stability to the region.
