Bayern Munich are reportedly preparing to derail Chelsea’s pursuit of Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, casting doubt over what had appeared to be a near-complete transfer for the England Under-21 star.
Earlier this month, Chelsea were believed to have agreed a seven-year deal with Bynoe-Gittens, who enjoyed a breakout campaign last season, scoring eight goals in the Bundesliga. The Blues, fresh off a fourth-place Premier League finish and Europa Conference League triumph, have been actively reinforcing their squad for a return to Champions League football — and saw Gittens as a key part of their long-term attacking plans.
However, according to KICKER, Bayern Munich have entered the race for the 19-year-old after failing to land Florian Wirtz, who is on his way to Liverpool. The German champions had also been monitoring Nico Williams of Athletic Bilbao, but with the Spaniard closing in on a move to Barcelona, Bayern have now identified Bynoe-Gittens as a top target.
Bynoe-Gittens is already a regular fixture at Dortmund, and his development has made him a priority acquisition for several top clubs. Bayern, known for prising talent from Bundesliga rivals, are said to see him as a long-term solution for their wide positions.
Chelsea’s urgency in the market has grown following several developments. They opted not to bring back Jadon Sancho, and Mykhailo Mudryk is now facing a doping charge, potentially sidelining him indefinitely. With limited wing options available to manager Enzo Maresca, losing out on Gittens would be a significant setback.
While Chelsea have completed a £30 million deal for forward Liam Delap, the club remains determined to secure additional attacking reinforcements. Bynoe-Gittens is reportedly still open to joining the London side — if they are willing to meet his £60 million valuation.
Whether Chelsea can stave off Bayern’s late intervention remains to be seen, but the German club’s record of sealing deals for domestic talent leaves the West London outfit facing an uphill battle.
